Kid on the Left was in Union County this past weekend, hosting a baseball camp at Timken Sports Complex where the focus for participants was honing their skills for the upcoming season.Kid on the Left was founded in 2023 by Josh Simpson, a 2012 graduate of Union County High School and 2016 graduate of Wofford College. The non-profit organization accomplishes its mission through hosting sports camps, awarding scholarships, and support career advisory programs. Simpson, who also played baseball at Wofford, stated the purpose of this camp was to teach fundamental skills, knowledge, and a deeper understanding of the game to young athletes. Simpson also stated that their main goal is to “leave communities better than we found them.”The special guest instructor during the weekend camp was Adam Scott, another former Wofford pitcher. Scott, a NY native was a Terrier pitcher from 2015-2018. Scott told the attendees about his career and the journey that led him to Wofford. Injuries hampered his high school career, and almost ended his baseball career, causing him to miss two seasons. These injuries would send him into a tough spot. He had to turn to his faith to pull through the tough time and with his faith, and the support of his church, he was able to persevere. Wofford was the only school that gave him a chance to play, so he took the offer and headed south. He says the school and the area hold a special place in his heart. It wasn’t until his senior year that everything fell into place on the baseball diamond. Cleveland took notice of his skillset and drafted him in the fourth round. Scott set school records for the most starts, innings pitched and strikeouts. He is also 3rd in SoCon history in strikeouts (389). He is currently a member of the Columbus Clippers, the AAA affiliate of the Guardians. He also played for the Savannah Bananas during the summer of 2016.At the conclusion of the camp, Simpson told the attendees that, “baseball is a game of failure. You will go into the Hall of Fame if you fail seven out of ten times at the plate.”He added that Scott had a lot of failure in his life, and he chose to not let the failure define him. He also told the attendees that there is a difference in failing and failure. He urged the attendees to not allow failing to define who they are or who they become. They will have to believe they can come back and win in a game or in life, especially when the road of “logic” ends.To learn more about Kid on the Left, visit their website at: www.kidontheleft.org
